Clay Aiken Recalls Rosie O’Donnell’s Unintended Outing

“You say defended, I say outed,” Clay Aiken remarked during a recent appearance on Page Six Radio. The former American Idol star revisited the fallout of a 2006 television incident, where Rosie O’Donnell’s attempt to protect him from a perceived homophobic slight on-air instead forced his sexuality into the public spotlight.

The controversy began during a guest-hosting stint on Live With Regis and Kelly. Aiken, attempting to interject during an interview, playfully placed his hand over Kelly Ripa’s mouth. Ripa’s sharp, on-air response about not knowing where his hand had been created an immediate, chilly tension. The following day, O’Donnell took up the cause on The View, aggressively defending Aiken, yet her intervention resulted in the public revelation of his sexuality before he felt prepared to address it himself.

Aiken, who was asleep during the broadcast, learned of the news from a friend who broke the revelation to him. Despite the profound distress caused by the moment, he maintains no personal animosity toward O’Donnell, framing her actions as a misguided attempt at solidarity rather than malice. Reflecting on the aftermath, Aiken characterized that period as the most catastrophic week of his career, confirming he and Ripa never reconciled or discussed the confrontation afterward.
