Avo Shifts Clinical Documentation Upstream with AI Inpatient Tool

The platform synthesizes live patient data with trusted clinical evidence to identify documentation opportunities while the patient is still in the hospital. By moving this process upstream, Avo aims to replace traditional, post-discharge Clinical Documentation Integrity (CDI) cycles that frequently result in under-coded records and costly administrative rework. According to Yair Saperstein, MD, MPH, co-founder and CEO of Avo, the system ensures that the same clinical evidence guiding treatment decisions also validates the accuracy of the medical record.

In a retrospective study using 167 de-identified charts from the MIMIC database, the technology captured 100% of evidence-supported Complication or Comorbidity (CC) and Major Complication or Comorbidity (MCC) diagnoses. In contrast, standard physician documentation identified only 52% of these cases. By reducing the reliance on manual reviews and downstream queries, the tool helps hospitals align their reimbursement more closely with the actual acuity of the care provided, ultimately supporting both financial performance and clinical quality metrics.
