Varvaglione 1921 Nominated for Environmental Advocate of the Year

The winery, now led by the fourth generation of the Varvaglione family, manages an experimental vineyard hosting more than 500 distinct grape varieties. This living laboratory serves as a central hub for studying viticultural resilience, drawing from genetic material across the Mediterranean and the Balkans. The estate’s recent acquisition of the historic Casino Nitti property in May 2026 further expands this research capacity, signaling a departure from traditional regional monoculture toward a broader understanding of genetic diversity.

Owner Marzia Varvaglione noted that the nomination validates the team's shift toward long-term land stewardship. Beyond the experimental fields, the winery has integrated renewable energy into its operations and actively promotes the survival of native varieties like Susumaniello and Negroamaro. By positioning these heritage grapes alongside modern climate-resilience research, the winery aims to define a sustainable model for Puglia’s future. The winners of the 27th annual Wine Star Awards are scheduled to be announced at a gala in January 2027.
