Rutgers and RWJBarnabas Health Launch Cloud-Powered Innovation Hub

Rutgers University and RWJBarnabas Health are establishing a dedicated technology innovation hub in New Brunswick, New Jersey, powered by Amazon Web Services. The initiative aims to integrate clinical expertise with cloud and artificial intelligence tools to solve real-world healthcare challenges ranging from hospital operations to medical education.

The new facility, housed within the Health and Life Science Exchange (HELIX), will serve as a permanent laboratory for interdisciplinary teams. Students across medicine, engineering, and computer science will engage in four- to 10-week rapid prototyping cycles, mentored by faculty and clinical experts. These teams will utilize AWS infrastructure to develop tools designed to improve clinical decision-making, patient experience, and care coordination.

This project formalizes a collaborative model previously tested through brief 48-hour hackathons, shifting toward a year-round engine for research and development. The hub is designed to be self-sustaining, with successful prototypes transitioning into the academic and clinical workflows of both institutions. For RWJBarnabas Health, the partnership represents a strategic effort to modernize care delivery, while Rutgers views the hub as a cornerstone for the upcoming unified School of Medicine. Operations at the facility are scheduled to commence this fall.
