For years, clinicians and patients have debated the efficacy of synthetic folic acid versus the bioactive 5-MTHF methylfolate. Despite the prevalence of both in prenatal supplements, few studies have directly compared their effects on reproductive health in a controlled environment. The FAMILIES (Folic Acid, Methylfolate & Infertility: Longitudinal Improvement & Experience Study) trial aims to bridge this data gap by enrolling 120 women across the United States.
Conducted by the research organization People Science, Inc., the study tracks participants for up to 72 weeks. Researchers will monitor blood biomarkers, time to conception, and pregnancy progression for women randomized into two groups, each receiving identical prenatal formulas that differ only in their folate source. Founder Ayla Barmmer, MS, RD, LDN, emphasizes that the company is committed to publishing the findings regardless of the results, aiming to provide practitioners with the evidence needed to offer more confident guidance to patients. Dr. Carla Williams, an OB/GYN involved in the discourse, notes that the study is a necessary step toward closing the persistent divide between common clinical questions and available scientific data.
