The initiative addresses a growing market demand for database flexibility, as rising Oracle support costs drive organizations toward the open-source alternative. According to the 2025 Stack Overflow Developer Survey, PostgreSQL currently holds the top spot among developer preferences, utilized by over 55% of respondents. Spinnaker's strategy centers on a dual-service approach: providing enterprise-grade support for existing PostgreSQL environments and offering specialized migration services through a partnership with HexaCluster.
These migration services utilize HexaCluster’s HexaRocket technology to automate data movement and mitigate risks during the transition from Oracle. Beyond immediate support, Spinnaker is developing its own enterprise-ready PostgreSQL distribution. This internal project focuses on maintaining long-term architectural control for clients, ensuring that customers avoid the trap of closed compatibility layers. Martin Biggs, recently appointed as vice president and general manager of the firm's PostgreSQL Practice, will oversee these offerings. The company maintains that its model allows businesses to modernize workload by workload, redirecting capital previously earmarked for proprietary licensing toward internal innovation and security hardening.
