Seventeen-year-old UCLA student Joseph Borna has launched ClassSwap, a digital platform designed to automate the frantic search for open university seats. Frustrated by the manual labor of refreshing enrollment portals and chasing add codes, Borna built the tool to connect students looking to exchange course sections.

The platform functions as a decentralized marketplace for academic schedules. Students list the courses they currently hold alongside the sections they need, allowing the system to match compatible swap requests. Beyond direct exchanges, the tool monitors specific classes and alerts users the moment an enrollment opportunity arises, effectively replacing the haphazard cycle of scouring group chats and emailing professors.

Borna developed the software to address a systemic failure in existing campus technology, which excels at course planning but falters once classes reach capacity. By centralizing these informal negotiations, the platform aims to reclaim the time students lose during the high-stakes registration period. Currently active at UCLA, USC, Santa Monica College, and CSUN, the service relies on network density to function effectively. The more students from a single campus who participate, the higher the probability of finding a match for a specific conflict.
