Out of the Ashes, a virtual-reality documentary directed by Rory Mitchell and Nonny de la Peña, reconstructs the devastation of the January 2025 Los Angeles wildfires through volumetric data and family archives. Narrated by Courtney B. Vance, the piece emphasizes local resilience and recovery efforts. Conversely, Peter Flaherty’s Empire at Sea utilizes augmented reality to stage a solarpunk drama. Set on a remote oil rig, the interactive experience uses cinematic holograms to force audiences to navigate complex dilemmas regarding sustainability and migration.
Agog co-founder Chip Giller noted that these awards underscore the potential of emerging technology to bridge the gap between abstract climate data and personal empathy. Beyond individual project support, Agog collaborated with the festival to host workshops and technical demonstrations aimed at shaping the next decade of immersive media. A third supported project, Solwata—a mixed-reality documentary about rising sea levels in the Solomon Islands—is currently continuing its festival circuit at the Toronto International Film Festival.
