Sudan Healthcare Nears Total Collapse Amid US Aid Cuts

Doctors Without Borders, known as Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF), reports that the agency's closure—orchestrated by President Donald Trump and Elon Musk—has severed the primary lifeline for both local residents and refugees. Muhammad Ibrahim, MSF's head of mission in Sudan, stated that as external funding vanishes, the burden on remaining facilities has become unsustainable. In the Um Rakuba refugee camp, the organization’s hospital now operates as one of the few functional providers in a region where roughly 37% of health infrastructure is offline.

The crisis extends beyond medicine, with food rations shrinking and critical protection programs being dismantled. Research published in The Lancet warns that the broader redirection of USAID programs could lead to over 14 million deaths by the end of the decade. Currently, the UN’s $2.87 billion response plan for Sudan remains less than half-funded, even as rates of severe malnutrition and malaria among children climb ahead of the rainy season. MSF officials are now urging international donors to provide flexible financing to prevent further systemic failure.
