Leaked Chats Reveal Israeli Guards Boasting of Fatal Prisoner Abuse

WhatsApp messages sent by guards at Ketziot Prison in November 2023 expose a pattern of lethal violence against Palestinian detainees. The communications, which include gleeful accounts of beatings and the subsequent deaths of prisoners, were recovered by prosecutors as part of a recent indictment against a dozen staff members.

The unearthed texts capture guards narrating assaults in real time, with one individual celebrating after a detainee required CPR, writing, "God willing, that son of a thousand whores will die." Another message noted the simplicity of the violence, stating, "Boom, count. Boom, dead prisoner." These exchanges were obtained during an investigation into the deaths of nine prisoners, marking a rare instance where internal evidence has penetrated the typically opaque environment of Israeli detention facilities.

Haaretz reports that the investigation points to more than just individual rogue actors; evidence suggests senior officials may have suppressed accounts of abuse or participated directly. While Ketziot Prison commander Yosef Knipes has been named by at least one witness, he denies any involvement. Advocacy group Breaking the Silence claims these messages represent only a fraction of systemic issues within the system, asserting that over 100 Palestinians have died in custody since October 2023. The group characterizes the current detention environment as one where torture has become institutional policy.
