The appointment comes as the organization seeks to address the shifting landscape of emerging technologies, including quantum computing and artificial intelligence. Locascio highlighted Leonard’s two decades of experience in the conformity assessment community as a vital asset for the Institute’s future direction. Before his tenure at the ANSI National Accreditation Board (ANAB), Leonard served as president and chief operating officer of the Laboratory Accreditation Bureau.
Warren Merkel, currently the vice president of engagement and strategy at ANAB, will step in as interim executive director. Merkel brings significant policy expertise from his previous career at the National Institute of Standards and Technology. His new mandate focuses on maintaining the integrity of ANAB’s global accreditation services during the leadership transition. Leonard stated that he intends to prioritize the organization's role in bolstering U.S. competitiveness and fostering trusted innovation across government and industry sectors.
