NetActuate Migrates C-Band Transition Program to Media Substrate

With the July 2027 regulatory deadline looming for the C-band spectrum auction, NetActuate has integrated its transition program into a new transport layer. By moving the service onto its proprietary Media Substrate, the company aims to provide broadcasters a reliable terrestrial alternative to satellite contribution circuits.

The Media Substrate, unveiled at IBC 2026, serves as the backbone for NetActuate’s C-Band Transition Acceleration Program. For broadcasters, the primary shift involves the elimination of self-managed redundancy. Previously, stations had to procure individual backup transponders or secondary circuits to ensure signal stability. Under the new model, broadcasters transmit a single stream while the platform manages diverse, redundant paths automatically. In recent blackout tests, the system maintained seamless output even when one primary path was completely severed.

Technically, the substrate supports eleven protocols, including SRT, RIST, ST 2110, and WHIP, allowing stations to retain their existing encoding hardware. To address the "last mile" bottleneck, the platform routes traffic around internet congestion, offering flexibility to mix dedicated circuits with satellite links. CEO Mark Mahle noted that the service allows stations to migrate on their own terms rather than rushing to beat the FCC-mandated phase-out of the 3.98 to 4.2 GHz spectrum.

NetActuate currently leverages its global network, which includes 22 locations across the United States, to facilitate these transitions. By acting as an independent operator rather than a satellite incumbent or reseller, the firm positions itself as a neutral provider for broadcasters navigating the industry-wide consolidation of the supply side.
