Major Retailers Adopt Digital Badge to Verify Community Impact

Marks & Spencer, Aldi, Lidl, and Sainsbury’s have begun rolling out the Neighbourly Mark, a new scannable digital badge designed to provide transparent, real-time evidence of corporate social responsibility. The initiative allows shoppers and employees to instantly verify claims regarding funding, volunteering, and surplus food donations directed toward local charities.

The Neighbourly Mark functions as a clickable portal embedded on websites, apps, and physical store signage. By scanning the badge, users gain access to a public profile that aggregates an organization's community contributions, replacing vague corporate statements with verifiable data. The platform currently connects businesses with a network of over 45,000 vetted charities and food banks.

Steve Butterworth, Chief Executive Officer at Neighbourly, noted that while many businesses assert their commitment to local causes, the supporting evidence is frequently difficult for consumers to access. The Mark aims to bridge this information gap by offering proof at the exact point of interaction. Beyond its utility for shoppers, the tool provides procurement teams with a documented record of social value delivery and helps employees engage more deeply with their company’s philanthropic efforts. Other founding partners include B&Q, William Hill, Coca-Cola Europacific Partners, Müller, Heineken UK, and Pret A Manger.
