China Southern Power Grid Targets Regional Energy Integration

At the Asia-Pacific Media Forum in Shenzhen, Chairman Qian Chaoyang positioned the utility as a central architect of regional connectivity. The company’s domestic performance provides the blueprint for its international expansion: it maintains world-class reliability with average annual outage times under 30 minutes, supported by 93 GW of renewable capacity. Innovation remains a primary driver, evidenced by the deployment of the 'Big Watt • Yudian' artificial intelligence model to manage complex grid operations.

Beyond China’s borders, the company has established 17 high-voltage transmission links with Vietnam, Laos, and Myanmar. These interconnections have facilitated over 84 TWh of cross-border electricity trade, with clean energy comprising more than 90% of the volume. In Laos, the utility’s partnership initiatives have contributed to a 70% reduction in local power outages. Further afield, its subsidiary Pluz Energía Perú leads its local market in supply reliability. By training nearly 2,000 international energy professionals and signing over 50 partnership agreements, the company is attempting to standardize its operational model across the Global South.
