Kean University and NJCU Finalize Historic Merger in New Jersey

Seventeen months of strategic planning culminated on July 1, 2026, as New Jersey City University officially integrated into the Kean University system. The newly established Kean Jersey City campus marks a significant shift for the state’s public higher education landscape, aiming to preserve academic access for the local community.

The transformation followed a competitive selection process where NJCU commissioned SPH Consulting Group to evaluate its financial stability and identify viable institutional partners. SPH conducted institution-wide due diligence and analyzed restructuring alternatives to ensure the merger could sustain a four-year public education presence in Jersey City.

Ricardo Azziz, principal of SPH Consulting Group, emphasized that the collaboration focused on protecting the public mission of the institution while expanding student resources. The merger serves as a model for other universities facing existential fiscal challenges, demonstrating how objective analysis and mission alignment can facilitate institutional survival and growth.
