Retail Tech Trends: RFID Deployments and AI Shopping Assistants

Major UK retailers are accelerating their digital infrastructure, with Sainsbury’s deploying RFID across its clothing lines and Asda completing a widespread roll-out of electronic shelf labels. These moves highlight a broader industry push to synchronize physical store inventory with digital management systems to improve operational efficiency.

Sainsbury’s is finalizing the implementation of radio frequency identification technology across 400 Tu clothing departments. The project, aimed at increasing stock visibility and replenishment speed, follows a successful pilot conducted earlier this year. Simultaneously, Asda has finished installing Vusion electronic shelf labels (eSELs) across more than 550 locations, including its Express petrol stations and convenience stores.

Beyond hardware, artificial intelligence is reshaping the store experience. The Home Depot has launched a nationwide roll-out of its Magic Apron tool, an AI-powered shopping assistant. The system allows customers to interact via text, voice, or image to locate products and receive project guidance. Industry observers note that while the interface is user-facing, the true complexity lies in backend integration—maintaining accurate aisle mapping, planogram data, and real-time inventory levels to ensure the digital assistant’s promises match the physical reality on the shop floor.
