Stephen Langford exits M&S after six-year digital transformation

After six years steering the digital evolution of Marks and Spencer, Stephen Langford has announced his departure from the retailer. The Director of Digital, Omnichannel & Partnerships leaves behind a business that has seen online revenues climb from £800 million to over £2 billion during his tenure.

Langford joined the company in 2020, inheriting a digital infrastructure that he described as under-invested and reliant on aging technology. His strategy focused on rebuilding foundational systems and aggressively expanding the brand's online reach. This overhaul included the 2020 launch of Nobody’s Child, which served as the inaugural partner for a new marketplace model now featuring a wide array of retail names.

The tenure was not without significant operational hurdles. In 2025, the company faced a severe cyber incident that forced the digital business offline for seven weeks. Langford credited the resilience of his team for the subsequent recovery, noting that the experience served as a testament to their problem-solving capabilities. As he prepares for his next professional chapter, the baton passes to David Clark, who will oversee the ongoing transformation efforts at the high-street giant.
