Christine Taylor Recalls 90s Hollywood Weight Pressure

Taylor, who landed the role of Marcia Brady after performing the character in The Real Live Brady Bunch, shared the anecdote during an appearance on the Office Ladies podcast. She noted that while she did not consider herself heavy, the requirement was presented abruptly after she had already secured the part. She recalled the pressure to conform to a specific screen image as a distinctly dated industry practice, joking that observant viewers can still spot the weight fluctuations in the final film due to subsequent reshoots.

This was not the only instance where Taylor navigated the complexities of Hollywood casting. She later revealed on The Drew Barrymore Show that she initially hesitated to audition for the role of Matilda Jeffries in Zoolander, fearing that competing for a part in her then-husband Ben Stiller’s project could create unnecessary friction. The role was offered to other performers, including Sarah Jessica Parker, before Taylor eventually stepped into the part. She now lightheartedly refers to herself as the production’s fourth choice.

Beyond her professional milestones, Taylor’s relationship with Stiller has seen its own evolution. Married in 2000, the couple separated in 2017 after 17 years, citing a period where they had grown in different directions. However, the forced proximity of the COVID-19 pandemic provided an unexpected opportunity to reconnect. The pair successfully reconciled after five years apart, a shift that coincided with Stiller re-evaluating his own career priorities following candid feedback from his daughter, Ella, regarding his absence during her formative years.
