Hawaii Energy Connection Hits 1,000 Battery Installations

Hawaii Energy Connection has reached a milestone of 1,000 residential energy storage installations, deploying 1,800 FranklinWH aPower units across the islands. This surge in local adoption comes as state regulators weigh a virtual power plant program designed to compensate homeowners for feeding stored energy back into the grid.

The installation milestone underscores a shift in the Hawaiian market, where battery adoption is moving beyond early enthusiasts into mainstream residential use. According to Vincent Ambrose, chief commercial officer of FranklinWH, the trend reflects a growing desire for energy independence among families facing high electricity costs and concerns over grid reliability. The FranklinWH systems, marketed locally under the KumuKit brand, provide whole-home management and backup power, allowing households to reduce reliance on the utility during peak demand hours.

State officials are currently evaluating a virtual power plant initiative that would allow utilities to aggregate thousands of these home batteries to stabilize the grid, treating them like a conventional power station. While Hawaii leads the nation in rooftop solar capacity, fewer than 16 percent of existing residential batteries currently participate in grid-support programs. Industry data suggests this gap represents significant untapped potential, as nearly half of all new residential solar projects across the United States now include battery storage components.
