Navy Veteran Runs USATF Championship 8K in Adult Diaper to Defy Stigma

Steve Parker, a Navy veteran and marathoner, completed the North Shore RunFest 8K in Salem, Massachusetts, with a time of 35 minutes and 53 seconds. While competing in the USATF New England Grand Prix event, Parker wore a NorthShore adult diaper to manage urge incontinence, setting a personal record in the process.

Parker’s performance at the September 3, 2026, race served as a public challenge to the common misconception that incontinence products are exclusively for the elderly or inactive. By averaging a 7:13 mile pace, the Nebraska native demonstrated that high-performance athletic goals remain achievable while managing urge incontinence, a condition he first encountered during active duty in the U.S. Navy. His participation was sponsored by NorthShore, a company seeking to shift the narrative surrounding bladder health through its role as the event’s presenting sponsor.

"Confidence won today, not incontinence," Parker stated at the finish line. His journey to the 8K course involved over a decade of navigating the physical and emotional toll of his condition, which he initially kept hidden due to shame. After discovering specialized products designed for heavy bladder leaks, Parker integrated the protection into his training regimen, comparing the necessity of the gear to wearing professional running shoes or using a GPS watch. This sentiment is shared by other brand advocates, including a 44-year-old singer who resumed public performances and improved his running pace significantly after adopting similar management strategies.
