Producers have begun the technical task of replacing Thornton’s voice in segments filmed weeks before the September 14 season premiere. The announcer, who has served the program since 2011, currently faces an internal investigation after an American Airlines passenger raised concerns during a flight in May. That incident triggered a law enforcement response upon arrival at Los Angeles International Airport, though Thornton’s attorney insists officers cleared him of any wrongdoing after a five-minute conversation.
Beyond the personnel crisis, the show is simultaneously implementing a major structural overhaul. Season 44 introduces the “Toss-Up Sprint,” a 30-second rapid-fire segment that replaces the traditional toss-up puzzle format. This pacing change aims to modernize the opening, even as the production team navigates the fallout of removing a voice that has been a staple of the broadcast for over 14 years.
