George Mason University to Host Virginia's First Open-Architecture Quantum System

George Mason University is partnering with Oxford-based TreQ to install a $7.7 million open-architecture quantum computing system on its Northern Virginia campus. The project, slated for completion by late summer 2027, aims to establish a regional hub for quantum research and workforce development in the National Capital Region.

The infrastructure will be the first U.S. deployment of TreQ’s proprietary Open Architecture Quantum (OAQ) framework, a system designed to integrate diverse processors, software, and networking technologies as they evolve. By moving away from rigid, single-vendor integration, the university intends to provide students, faculty, and industry partners with a flexible environment for experimentation and discovery. George Mason President Gregory Washington noted that the investment serves as a critical step in building the regional infrastructure necessary to compete in a sector projected to generate trillions in economic value by 2035.

Funding for the initiative includes a $2.4 million catalyst investment from the university and strategic support from the Virginia Innovation Partnership Corporation (VIPC). Beyond hardware, the project underpins the university’s broader Quantum Science and Engineering Center (QSEC) efforts, which recently launched a master’s degree program to address the industry’s acute talent shortage. TreQ will oversee the system’s operation and facilitate connections between Virginia innovators and the global quantum ecosystem, positioning the state as a long-term magnet for the quantum supply chain.
