JD Sports turns to HyperFinity to overhaul loyalty strategy

JD Sports has engaged data specialist HyperFinity to deploy a new personalisation engine, aiming to move beyond generic marketing. By conducting structured trials across its UK stores, the retailer is shifting its loyalty strategy toward evidence-based incentives tailored to individual customer spending habits and purchase history.

The collaboration focused on determining which rewards effectively drive incremental basket spend. Through rigorous testing, the companies evaluated the impact of cash-based rewards against spend multipliers, discovering that high-spending customers respond more favorably to the latter. The trials also highlighted that relevance is a more powerful driver of engagement than the sheer value of an incentive, while revealing that overly frequent offers lead to fatigue.

Chris Hope, Global Head of Insight & Analytics at JD Sports, noted that the structured nature of these trials provided a clear roadmap for future customer interactions. Thomas Hill, co-founder of HyperFinity, emphasized that the project was designed to build confidence in scaling personalisation efforts. Following a successful trial period that saw a measurable uplift in in-store loyalty sales, JD Sports now identifies a multi-million pound opportunity for growth within the first year of the programme's full implementation. The initiative includes a comprehensive suite of new internal assets, such as measurement dashboards and refined customer segmentation models, which the retailer intends to use as a foundation for ongoing personalization efforts.
