Alcampo transitions to digital price tags in modernization drive

Spanish grocery retailer Alcampo is replacing paper price strips with electronic shelf labels across 84 supermarkets. The partnership with Chinese firm Hanshow aims to streamline store operations while cutting annual paper waste by over 1,800 kilometers and reducing carbon emissions by an estimated 8.4 tonnes.

The deployment of more than 560,000 digital labels creates a centralized platform for pricing and shelf-edge communication. By automating updates, the retailer expects to improve data accuracy and reduce the labor hours currently dedicated to manual tag changes. This shift allows floor teams to focus on direct customer interactions rather than routine administrative tasks.

This move aligns with a broader industry trend toward digital infrastructure in retail. Tesco is also initiating a large-scale rollout of similar technology, planning to cover approximately 3,000 stores over the next two years. Following a 2025 pilot program, the UK retailer intends to use these systems to lower operational costs and sharpen pricing precision. Hanshow continues to secure a significant footprint in the sector, recently earning a spot on the RTIH Retail Technology Hot 100 list for its contributions to omnichannel retail innovation.
