Jacob Elordi’s The Dog Stars Stumbles with $8 Million Debut

With an $80 million production budget and Ridley Scott at the helm, The Dog Stars was expected to command the box office. Instead, the film opened to a meager $8 million across 3,330 North American theaters, landing in fifth place behind competing releases and failing to leverage Jacob Elordi’s star power.

The adaptation of Peter Heller’s 2012 novel follows a lone survivor navigating a post-apocalyptic landscape with his dog. Despite a cast including Margaret Qualley, Josh Brolin, and Guy Pearce, the film struggled to resonate with audiences, garnering mixed reviews that criticized its pacing and narrative direction. Viewers have described the experience as underwhelming, with some noting that the storytelling failed to capture the depth of the original source material.

This tepid performance mirrors the trajectory of Scott’s 2021 historical drama The Last Duel, which also faced a difficult opening and struggled to recoup its high production costs. Following the release, both lead and director are pivoting to new ventures. Elordi is reportedly in talks for the A24 thriller Scapegoat, while Scott is currently developing the final installment of the Alien franchise. Whether this initial collaboration will remain their only project remains an open question, as the film’s financial shortfall casts a shadow over future creative partnerships.
