Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines Adopts Power Knot Biodigesters

Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines has integrated Power Knot’s LFC biodigesters across its fleet to automate organic waste processing. This move signals a shift away from traditional incineration and maceration methods, aligning the UK-based operator with tightening environmental standards while cutting operational costs associated with port disposal fees.

The LFC biodigester system utilizes aerobic digestion to convert food waste into water directly on board. By bypassing the need for energy-intensive incineration or complex waste stream handling, the technology offers a cleaner footprint for the cruise operator’s three vessels. According to Power Knot President Iain Milnes, the installation serves as a logical progression for a company already committed to rigorous recycling and the systematic removal of single-use plastics from its guest experience.

Designed for seamless integration into existing galley and waste management infrastructure, the biodigesters are available in nine sizes capable of processing up to 6,000 kg of waste daily. Beyond environmental compliance with MARPOL regulations, the systems offer a financial incentive for operators: most installations recover their initial investment in under two years through reduced handling requirements and lower fuel consumption. This deployment marks another milestone for the California-based manufacturer as it scales its presence within the global maritime sector.
