The funding, approved by the AIDEA board on August 27, 2026, focuses on geotechnical drilling and engineering essential for the final design of the proposed road. This work includes bridge foundation studies, culvert sizing, and refining the route for the 100-mile corridor, which consists of a 22-mile public segment and a 78.5-mile public-private section. For U.S. GoldMining, the project is a vital link for its Whistler Gold-Copper deposit, a site currently being evaluated for its significant economic potential.
Tim Smith, CEO of U.S. GoldMining, noted that the state’s commitment serves as a bridge between exploration and tangible development, potentially securing domestic critical mineral supplies. The project remains a priority for the state, with officials emphasizing that the geotechnical data serves as a gating input to transform theoretical mapping into physical construction. While the company continues to model the robust economics of the Whistler project—which includes an estimated $2 billion net present value—the actualization of this mining hub remains contingent on the progress of the state-led infrastructure corridor.
