Fibocom Launches RU311 Module to Bridge 4G and 5G for IoT

Shenzhen-based wireless specialist Fibocom has introduced the RU311 5G RedCap module series, designed to help manufacturers transition mid-tier IoT devices from 4G LTE to a streamlined 5G architecture. Built on the UNISOC V527 platform, the hardware focuses on balancing power efficiency and cost for industrial and automotive applications.

The RU311 series supports dual-mode connectivity, offering 5G RedCap alongside LTE Cat.4 compatibility. In RedCap mode, the module reaches peak downlink speeds of 226 Mbps and uplink speeds of 120 Mbps, while maintaining 150 Mbps and 50 Mbps respectively under LTE. These specifications target high-demand environments including industrial gateways, surveillance systems, and mobile broadband devices that require consistent performance without the complexity of high-end 5G hardware.

To minimize the engineering burden of hardware migration, the module features a compact 32 mm × 29 mm × 2.4 mm LGA footprint. Its pin layout is engineered for compatibility with Fibocom’s existing FG132 and NL668/L716 series. By utilizing standardized interfaces such as USB, UART, and RGMII, manufacturers can repurpose existing motherboard designs, significantly reducing the time required for testing and new product integration.

Fibocom is offering the series in LGA, M.2, and Mini PCIe form factors to accommodate diverse development needs, from rapid platform validation to final industrial deployment. According to Kony Li, General Manager of Fibocom’s MTC Business Unit, the RU311 is intended to provide a pragmatic connectivity option that matches specific business requirements as devices evolve. The collaboration with UNISOC aims to expand the RedCap ecosystem, allowing developers to focus resources on application-specific features rather than repetitive hardware development.
