McCain deploys drone delivery for London park picnics

Picnickers at London’s Brockwell Park received an unconventional bank holiday surprise this week as McCain utilized drones to deliver portions of its Crispy French Fries. The initiative, dubbed "The Fry Drop," saw the company deploying Hussel drones to drop off fresh snacks to park-goers throughout the afternoon.

The project operated between 11 am and 6 pm, with all fries prepared in a controlled food truck environment stationed nearby to avoid the use of open flames or traditional frying equipment within the park grounds. According to McCain spokesperson Laura Koscik, the campaign was designed to elevate the standard picnic experience through an unexpected technological twist, effectively bringing the concept of air frying to a public outdoor setting.

While the stunt highlighted the growing interest in automated logistics, such advancements in drone delivery remain a focal point for the retail sector. The technology behind these autonomous solutions is set to be a primary category of interest at the 2026 RTIH Innovation Awards, which recognize developments in omnichannel retail. Entries for the upcoming ceremony, scheduled for November 4 at The HAC in Central London, are currently open as the industry continues to explore new methods for on-demand consumer service.
