Historic Forest Theater to Reclaim Dallas Skyline After 50 Years

The reopening event, scheduled for 5:30 p.m., serves as the cornerstone of a broader revitalization strategy led by Forest Forward. The project aims to weave arts and culture into the fabric of South Dallas, pairing the theater’s restoration with investments in local education, housing, and economic development. Once a premier destination for live entertainment, the 1949-built structure is being transformed into a multipurpose campus featuring a 1,000-person concert hall, a black box theater, and creative education laboratories.

Elizabeth Wattley, CEO of Forest Forward, describes the restoration as a homecoming that transcends the physical building. The project functions as a catalyst for local growth, offering residents spaces for entrepreneurship and community connection. The theater’s return is tied to the Light the Tower campaign, a $2.5 million fundraising initiative that allows supporters to contribute to the preservation of the site. While the venue has been closed since 2008, organizers emphasize that the theater remains a symbol of the neighborhood’s identity and its future potential.
