MUSC Health and VirtuAlly Expand Virtual Triage to Streamline ER Intake

The initiative pairs VirtuAlly’s remote nursing staff with the existing Virtual Provider in Triage (VPIT) program. While virtual nurses handle documentation and initial assessments, VPIT physicians evaluate patients to order testing or authorize discharges for lower-acuity cases. This dual-track approach aims to reduce wait times by transforming idle arrival periods into active clinical care sessions.

For bedside teams, the shift offloads administrative documentation and assessment tasks, allowing them to focus on high-acuity interventions requiring physical presence. According to VirtuAlly Chief Nursing Officer Angel Bozard, placing experienced nurses at the point of entry improves both clinical decision-making and overall throughput during high-volume periods. The model, which originated from development work at the Medical University of South Carolina, is designed to be scalable across various hospital settings. Dr. Marc Bartman and Dr. J. Danny Park, key architects of the program, will present their findings on these integrated workflows at the 14th Annual Telehealth Summit of South Carolina on September 2, 2026.
