National Public Lands Day Targets Record Volunteerism for 250th Anniversary

The event serves as a cornerstone for the America Gives campaign, an effort designed to cement volunteerism as a defining feature of the country's semiquincentennial. Last year, the initiative saw over 55,000 participants contribute an estimated $9.4 million in service value across 900 locations. This year, the National Environmental Education Foundation is collaborating with Outward Bound USA to broaden engagement through 'The Reset,' a program specifically targeting families and young people.

Events are scheduled nationwide, ranging from invasive plant removal at Kenilworth Aquatic Gardens in Washington, DC, to educational fishing clinics at Alabama's Little River Canyon National Preserve. The signature 2026 event will take place near Mesa, Arizona, where volunteers will focus on restoring the Lower Salt River. Federal agencies, including the National Park Service and the Bureau of Land Management, are providing the infrastructure, while the National Association of State Park Directors is coordinating state-level contributions to ensure the day remains a collective effort to maintain the country's shared outdoor resources.
