According to Susan Lyman, Garmin’s vice president of global consumer sales and marketing, the instrument focuses on simplicity and compact integration at the helm. The unit connects to broader marine systems via NMEA 2000 and the proprietary Garmin BlueNet network, supporting wireless communication with gWind sensors, marine remotes, and quatix smartwatches.
Software maintenance for the GMI 40 is handled through the ActiveCaptain smartphone app. For boaters upgrading from the legacy GMI 20 model, Garmin offers an adapter plate to facilitate installation into existing dashboard cutouts. The device is available as a standalone unit for $599.99, or as part of several hardware bundles ranging from $1,099.99 to $1,899.99. These packages can include various transducers, such as the gWind wired or wireless options, or specialized sensors for depth, speed, and water temperature monitoring.
