Since 1968, the sister state relationship has relied on consistent person-to-person exchange, with over 11,000 citizens participating in cultural, educational, and environmental programs. This bond was recently highlighted when Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer addressed the Shiga Prefectural Assembly in 2025, marking a rare diplomatic milestone for the region.
During his upcoming trip, Mikazuki will join Whitmer for the Mackinac Bridge Walk to discuss the trajectory of the partnership beyond its 60th year. Beyond ceremonial events, the governor is scheduled to tour Michigan Central in Detroit. By engaging with this innovation hub, he aims to identify collaborative opportunities in startup development and regional revitalization, ensuring that the alliance remains relevant for future generations.
