Francois M. de Visscher Honored for Four Decades of Family Business Advisory

Born in Belgium and educated at the Catholic University of Louvain, de Visscher moved to the United States in 1976 to refine his expertise in accounting and finance at Rutgers University. His professional trajectory began at Coopers & Lybrand before he transitioned into investment banking at Smith Barney. It was there he identified a critical need for specialized guidance in family-owned companies, leading him to establish the firm's Family Business Group in 1985.

In 1990, he launched de Visscher Advisors, an independent practice that has since provided capital planning and liquidity strategies to more than 400 family offices. His influence extends into the private equity sector through the founding of Family Capital Growth Partners and his ongoing role as executive chair of Family Office Direct Investment Services. Beyond his commercial work, de Visscher has maintained a long-standing diplomatic presence as the honorary consul of Belgium in Connecticut since 2003, earning him the title of Knight of the Crown from King Philippe of Belgium.

His approach centers on a "listen before you talk" philosophy, emphasizing the importance of fiduciary responsibility and mentoring the next generation of consultants. This commitment is formalized through the annual de Visscher Award, designed to support young professionals entering the field. Today, he remains active on the boards of several private enterprises, balancing his corporate oversight with a dedication to fostering collaborative investment models among family-owned businesses.
