Lawmakers and Journalists Condemn CBS News Over El-Sayed Coverage

Democratic lawmakers and media critics are denouncing CBS News for an analysis that linked US Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed to the September 11 terrorist attacks. The report, which scrutinized the candidate’s past social media activity, drew immediate backlash for allegedly deploying Islamophobic tropes against the Muslim politician.

The controversy centers on a CBS News feature suggesting that El-Sayed, a son of Egyptian immigrants, could face political headwinds as the 25th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks approaches. To support this narrative, the network highlighted two deleted social media posts: one comparing the unity required to fight the Covid-19 pandemic to the national response following 2001, and another discussing the human cost of the subsequent War on Terror.

El-Sayed defended his comments as a call to protect American servicemen from unnecessary conflicts, but the framing sparked sharp rebukes from Capitol Hill. Rep. Yassamin Ansari (D-Ariz.) labeled the headline “insane” and “blatantly racist,” while Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D-Mich.) characterized the coverage as a “coordinated” attack. Media figures, including The Nation’s Jeet Heer and Zeteo editor-in-chief Mehdi Hasan, argued the piece signals a shift toward institutionalized Islamophobia under the network's current management. Even internal dissent has surfaced, with at least one anonymous CBS staffer reportedly describing the editorial decision as “horribly Islamophobic.”
