Bridging the STEM Gap for Blind and Low-Vision Students

For students who are blind or have low vision, the path to STEM proficiency is often blocked by a lack of accessible visual materials. Curriculum Associates and the American Printing House for the Blind are now partnering to launch a tactile graphics library designed to integrate directly with i-Ready Inform assessments.

The collaboration aims to eliminate the labor-intensive process educators currently face when manually creating tactile materials. By providing a searchable, high-quality library, the initiative allows teachers to quickly locate and print essential diagrams and charts. This resource, scheduled for release in the 2026–2027 school year, ensures that students can engage with rigorous assessment content on par with their sighted peers.

Beyond immediate printing needs, the project infrastructure is built to support next-generation assistive hardware, including Monarch refreshable tactile displays. According to Lauralyn Randles, senior director of accessible test and assessment, the goal is to shift the educator's focus from material production to direct instruction. By streamlining the creation of these materials, the partnership addresses a critical barrier in STEM education, where limited access to visual data has historically hindered student participation and career development.
