Tim Kaine Accuses Trump Administration of Unlawful Killings at Sea

Based on his review of classified notifications provided to Congress, the senator concluded that the military is conducting fatal operations far beyond the parameters established by the Department of Justice’s Office of Legal Counsel. He described the current effort as both legally dubious and entirely ineffective, pointing to a Drug Enforcement Administration analysis that found no measurable impact on the volume of illegal drugs entering the United States.

Despite these allegations, the administration appears to be doubling down on its maritime strategy. On Monday, U.S. Southern Command announced the creation of the Joint Task Force Western Hemisphere, a new unit designed to centralize and expand anti-narcotics operations. This restructure replaces the previous Joint Task Force Southern Spear, signaling a shift toward a more permanent, high-pressure security posture in the Caribbean and Pacific. While critics like Kaine demand an immediate halt to the strikes, the new command structure suggests the administration remains committed to its current trajectory.
