Caleb Shomo Details Backlash Following Public Coming Out

Since announcing he is gay in May 2026, Beartooth frontman Caleb Shomo has faced a wave of intense public hostility. The 33-year-old singer, who finalized a divorce from his wife of 14 years, Fleur Shomo, in July, is now speaking openly about the toll this vitriol has taken on his life and performance.

During an August appearance on the podcast The Breakdown with Nath & Johnny, Shomo described a deliberate decision to stop censoring his identity. He committed to dressing and performing exactly as he chooses, despite anticipating resistance. That choice, however, triggered a surge of homophobia that reached beyond social media commentary. Shomo revealed that the pressure became so overwhelming that he periodically retreated from the internet entirely to preserve his mental health.

Even on stage, the singer struggled to reconcile his professional duties with the emotional exhaustion caused by public scrutiny. He noted that the backlash did not subside after his official statement; rather, it persisted as he continued to release music. The singer admitted that for years he suppressed his true self with alcohol, a cycle he broke only recently as he began working toward self-acceptance. Despite the personal turmoil and the dissolution of his long-term marriage, Shomo remains focused on his art, recently releasing the album Pure Ecstasy and preparing for an upcoming world tour.
