The study centers on Caristo Diagnostics' FAI-Score™ biomarker, which utilizes artificial intelligence to assess arterial inflammation. By applying this technology to non-contrast cardiac CT scans—a faster and more affordable diagnostic tool than traditional contrast imaging—researchers successfully detected elevated mortality risks in patients previously classified as low-risk. This methodology outperformed conventional risk-factor-based assessments, particularly in patients lacking standard indicators such as hypertension or high cholesterol.
Beyond coronary health, the ORFAN-MAESTRIA study of over 81,000 patients highlighted the potential for AI to predict stroke. By identifying signs of left atrial myopathy on routine cardiac CTs, the algorithm flagged high-risk individuals with a 17-fold greater likelihood of cardioembolic stroke, operating independently of atrial fibrillation. While some of these applications remain in the investigational phase, they point toward a future where routine imaging provides a "virtual biopsy" of vascular health, potentially allowing clinicians to intervene long before acute events occur.
