The Red Willow project, located in Stettler County, consists of a 225 MWac solar plant paired with a 100 MW battery energy storage system. Under the terms of the agreement, Westbridge will receive an initial cash payment at closing, alongside milestone-based payments tied to the commercial operation of the battery and solar components. The project has already secured necessary approvals from the Alberta Utilities Commission and holds an established interconnection position with the Alberta Electric System Operator.
This divestment occurs as Alberta’s renewable energy landscape gains regulatory clarity following the implementation of the Canada-Alberta TIER agreement, which sets a long-term carbon pricing trajectory through 2040. Simultaneously, the province faces a significant surge in electricity demand, with prospective large-load transmission requests exceeding 16 GW. Westbridge maintains a robust development pipeline in the region, including the 300 MWac Dolcy Solar project and several stand-alone battery storage developments. CEO Stefano Romanin cited the sale as validation of the company's focus on prime sites with strong transmission access, noting that utility-scale solar and storage are increasingly essential to meeting the power requirements of the AI and data-center sector across North America.
