Lyntris Scales Passive Thermal Management for Defense Hardware

Defense contractor Lyntris, Inc. has finalized a multi-year investment in its Jessup, Maryland facility to produce phase change material (PCM) heat sinks. This expansion aims to provide passive cooling for sensors and missile seekers, enabling high-rate manufacturing for next-generation systems that require compact, reliable thermal management in contested environments.

As sensor density and power requirements increase, traditional active cooling systems—relying on pumps, tubing, and reservoirs—often prove too bulky and complex for attritable defense platforms. Lyntris’s new PCM technology functions as a thermal battery, where material inside the heat sink melts to absorb energy, maintaining electronics within safe operating temperatures for the duration of a mission without the need for mechanical plumbing.

The newly commissioned manufacturing line consolidates the entire production sequence under one roof, including precision machining, vacuum brazing, and final assembly. This vertical integration eliminates the risks associated with multi-vendor supply chains, which often delay qualification and production schedules. Matt Parisi, VP of Business Development at Lyntris, noted that the facility is specifically engineered to handle the thousands of units required for modern missile and sensor programs. The company has already commenced production and is currently engaged in discussions with defense prime contractors to integrate these passive cooling solutions into upcoming platform requirements.
