Helsinki Biennial 2027 to Explore the Unknowns

Curators Mami Kataoka and Arja Miller are spearheading the project, which aims to move beyond definitive answers by inviting audiences to engage with uncertainty and curiosity. The event draws inspiration from fields ranging from astronomy and geology to mythology and spirituality, challenging visitors to reconsider the visible and invisible worlds. Plans include roughly 45 artists and groups, with the initial roster featuring names such as Yoshitomo Nara, Tara Donovan, Laurent Grasso, and Britta Marakatt-Labba.

The biennial leverages Helsinki’s unique geography, blending maritime landscapes with urban infrastructure. By integrating wild island nature and historic military fortifications on Vallisaari with the city center’s iconic promenade, the event establishes a distinct Nordic cultural profile. Beyond the temporary exhibits, the organizers emphasize a lasting legacy, as many commissioned works remain in the city’s permanent public art collection after the festival concludes.
