FlyersRights Challenges Proposed Rollback of Airline Pricing Transparency

“This proposed rule is a license for airlines to confuse, deceive, and make it more difficult for passengers to price shop,” said Paul Hudson, president of the advocacy group FlyersRights, as he formally challenged the Department of Transportation’s attempt to weaken the long-standing Full Fare Advertising Rule in Washington this week.

The organization submitted official comments opposing the Department of Transportation’s recent proposal to alter the 1984 regulation, which mandates that airlines display the total ticket price inclusive of all taxes and fees. Hudson argues that the department’s justification for the change lacks evidence, noting that carriers already prominently disclose government-mandated charges. By allowing airlines to highlight taxes and fees more aggressively than the actual base fare, the proposed flexibility threatens to obscure the true cost of travel.

FlyersRights contends that the department’s current stance undermines competition by complicating price comparisons for consumers. Instead of prioritizing the separation of mandatory government levies, the group asserts that regulators should focus on greater transparency for ancillary fees—charges airlines actually control. The advocacy organization, which has represented air travelers since 2007, maintains that the current rules remain the most effective defense against deceptive advertising practices in the aviation industry.
