Linux Foundation Adopts TRACE to Standardize AI Runtime Evidence

As autonomous AI agents navigate increasingly complex cloud environments, the Linux Foundation has taken over governance of TRACE, an open specification designed to provide cryptographically verifiable proof of how AI models handle sensitive data and adhere to governance policies across diverse hardware infrastructures.

Developed by a coalition including AMD, Intel, Microsoft, OPAQUE, and the Technology Innovation Institute (TII), TRACE aims to solve the problem of fragmented compliance standards. By binding software environments, data classifications, and tool usage into a single portable artifact, the specification allows organizations to verify that AI systems operate within defined security parameters regardless of the underlying cloud provider.

Rather than reinventing security protocols, TRACE aggregates existing industry standards like RATS, EAT, and SLSA into a unified evidence layer. The project has already gained significant traction, recording nearly 135,000 PyPI downloads in the ten weeks following its June 2026 debut at the Confidential Computing Summit. Under the Linux Foundation, technical development will move to the Coalition for Secure AI (CoSAI) to ensure vendor-neutral evolution. This move addresses a critical industry shift where enterprises require independent, hardware-attested proof of operational integrity before trusting AI agents with critical business systems.
