Busy Philipps Recounts Life-Saving Brain Tumor Diagnosis

Philipps initially scheduled a full-body MRI in early 2025 after reading about the procedure on social media. Despite her primary care physician’s dismissal of the scan as unnecessary for a healthy patient, she persisted. The appointment was nearly scrapped on February 12 due to a blizzard and the emotional weight of James Van Der Beek’s passing just one day prior. Her ex-husband, Marc Silverstein, ultimately convinced her to keep the date, leading to the incidental discovery of a grade 2 oligodendroglioma.

Dr. Orrin Devinsky performed the initial five-hour surgery on March 2 to remove the mass. While her neuro-oncologist, Dr. Alexandra Miller, noted that early detection provided a favorable prognosis, the recovery hit a significant hurdle in April. A staph infection in the surgical incision necessitated a second procedure to clean the site and remove a titanium tack from her skull. Philipps, who also stars in the CBS series Cupertino, found the second operation emotionally taxing, describing it as a return to square one.

Reflecting on the preceding years, Philipps questions if the tumor contributed to intense emotional volatility she previously attributed to perimenopause. She recalls telling friends that her brain felt broken, a sensation that has vanished since the surgery. Though she requires no chemotherapy or radiation, she remains under surveillance for recurrence. Philipps now views the fortuitous timing of her scan as the defining factor in her survival.
