Singapore Court Upholds $640 Million Award Against Tata Power

The final judgment follows a series of arbitration proceedings at the Singapore International Arbitration Centre that began in November 2020. A three-member tribunal—presided over by Professor Lawrence Boo alongside Stuart Isaacs KC and retired Indian Supreme Court Judge Amal K. Ganguli—unanimously determined in 2023 that Tata Power breached its contractual duties. The panel found that the company used confidential information to pursue the Krutogorovo project while misleading its partner.

By July 2025, the tribunal settled on a principal damage figure of $490.32 million. With interest accruing at 5.33% per annum since late 2020, the debt grows by roughly $71,600 every day. The court's latest decision confirms that these awards are final, binding, and subject to global enforcement. Beyond the primary damages, Tata Power remains liable for substantial legal and arbitration costs, including previously ordered payments of over SGD 11 million.
