Diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) represents a significant health risk, with hospital admissions for the condition climbing 55% over the last decade. Because DKA can progress rapidly—sometimes within hours—patients often lack the tools to distinguish early warning signs from common infections. Current clinical guidance relies on periodic testing, yet many individuals do not possess blood ketone meters or the ability to measure levels consistently outside of a medical facility.
Abbott’s new system shifts this dynamic by operating in the background, continuously tracking ketones alongside glucose. While traditional glucose monitors act as a "speedometer" for daily management, the company describes the ketone feature as a "check engine light" that alerts users to dangerous metabolic shifts. The device, which supports wear for up to 10 days, is intended for patients aged two and older. Abbott plans to integrate the technology with several automated insulin delivery systems, including those from Beta Bionics and Sequel Med Tech, by the end of this year, with further expansions scheduled for 2027.
