The initiative addresses a significant challenge in air travel: approximately 80% of disabilities are not immediately visible to others. By wearing a Sunflower lanyard, passengers can discreetly signal to staff that they may require extra time, clearer communication, or additional assistance. This voluntary system removes the burden from travelers to repeatedly explain their specific needs while navigating busy terminals.
Benjamin Clendaniel, Director of Airports for the Delaware River and Bay Authority, emphasized that the program provides a necessary visual cue for conditions that often go unrecognized. To prepare for the rollout, ILG personnel have completed specialized training designed to foster a supportive, non-judgmental response. Rather than making assumptions, staff are now equipped to ask how they can best assist individual travelers. The airport joins a network of over 350 airports worldwide that have implemented the program since its inception in 2016. Complimentary lanyards will be available at the Airport Operations counter for those seeking a more seamless and accessible transit experience.
