Freed-Hardeman University Marks 157th Year With Auditorium Renovation

The restoration of the historic campus landmark balances modern utility with institutional heritage. While the facility now features upgraded seating, advanced audiovisual systems, and an accessibility-focused elevator, the project aimed to preserve the character of a space that has served the university for nearly five decades. President Keith Harris described the renovation as a commitment to future generations, ensuring the auditorium remains a central hub for the campus community.

The auditorium’s namesake, David Thomas Dryden, was remembered during the ceremony for his influence on his family’s commitment to Christian education. His great-grandson, Jay Dryden, a member of the university’s Board of Trustees, noted that the family's ties to the institution are rooted in the values passed down through generations. Following the ribbon-cutting, the academic year officially commenced with the annual Tolling of the Bell, a 26-year-old tradition. Jay Dryden and his family served as Bellmasters, ringing the bell 15 times to represent each decade of the university’s history in Henderson. Addressing the student body, Dryden encouraged the incoming cohort to prioritize mentorship, persistence, and spiritual growth as they navigate their academic tenure.
